Dare to do differently and get out of your comfort zone

Social Impact Lab Speaker Series: Transforming the working lives of refugees in the UK

On the 1st February our CEO, Fuad Mahamed, gave a sold-out talk on transforming the working lives of refugees in the UK at the University of Southampton’s Social Impact Lab.

The Social Impact Lab is developing world-class social impact leadership among University of Southampton students. As part of their mission, they are committed to showcase different role models of global leadership that can inspire their students throughout their careers in social impact.

Fuad introduced ACH and the work we do changing the working lives of refugees in the UK, as well as speaking about his own personal story and trajectory. He then took questions about his trajectory as a social entrepreneur and social leader.

The overwhelming themes to come out of the seminar were that Brexit means we have to tap into the skills of our refugees to power our economy, and that social leaders should “dare to do differently and get out of your comfort zone”.

Finding Shared Ground in Migration and Integration

Then, on 6th-8th February, Fuad was part of a group of over 100 fantastic and experienced participants at the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Unbound Philanthropy: Shared Ground Residential in Leamington Spa.

This was the second Shared Ground Fund residential, providing an opportunity for attendees to network, share knowledge and learning, identify ways of maximising the impact of our work and discuss policy and strategy in the area of migration and integration.

All of the organisations present were committed to working collectively to ensure people who migrate can get support and thrive, and communities experiencing migration can become stronger and more connected.

Whilst there, Fuad took part in a workshop on inclusion and integration, and said: “the event was a thought provoking one and it was good to meet other leaders from the refugee sector”

His next speaking appearance is in Sweden at the Multicultural Housing Areas Conference in Stockholm on 21st March, as our expertise continues to be in demand.
