Caring for Children at Home as a Career

A group of 14 learners in Birmingham have been finding out about the different careers which are available to work with children, with the help of their tutor, Michelle.

They were particularly interested in finding out about options for work which they could do alongside looking after their own children. The training team in Birmingham arranged for speakers to talk to the group about becoming a childminder, fostering looked after children and working as a nanny or a babysitter.

They had fun exploring sensory play materials such as ‘gloop’ and playdough and found out why these are great activities for children of all ages.

Safeguarding is really important when working with children so they learnt how to keep children safe in the home and studied emergency First Aid for babies and children.

The learners all gained a Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering, so they have the skills and knowledge to safely prepare meals and snacks for children in their care.

All the learners have now progressed on to the Level 2 Certificate in Skills for Childcare and are hoping to find jobs in the childcare industry or study at Level 3 in the future.
