Imagine being forced to leave your home country, to drop all your plans and start again somewhere entirely new. This is the reality for the thousands of refugees who have arrived in the UK over the last few years. But despite being displaced in unfamiliar surroundings, the people we’ve worked with have shown us time and again that they have the tenacity and ambition to start a new life in the UK.

Below are stories from people who we have had the pleasure of working with and have since settled and rebuilt their lives here in the UK – or forged a career helping others to do the same.

Rehman's Story

Rehman moved from Pakistan to the UK just over a year ago and has recently had a reunion with his family. He came to the UK with skills, but a language barrier. Now he is working on his language and has his own home with his family. He hopes to start applying for jobs soon.

Sardar's Story

Sardar has been living in the UK for the past two and half years and in that time he has achieved so much. Through Himilo courses Sardar has gained confidence and English language skills, enabling him to find employment.

Mohammed's Story

Originally from Sudan, Mohammed first moved to Bristol in January 2015. He had a friend who was also living in Bristol; however, when he did move here his friend left for London, leaving Mohammed feeling alone in a new city.

Mohammed's story

Moving to Wolverhampton as a refugee, Mohammed met some friends who suggested for him to contact ACH. ACH helped Mohammed with a variety of different things when he arrived in the UK. Firstly, Mohammed was given a house to live in.

Mariam's story

When she came to ACH, she wasn’t confident in speaking English and needed some help getting set up in the UK.

Parisa's Story

Originally from Iran, Parisa moved to Birmingham in April 2016, having spent 5 months in London.

Samir's story

Originally from Sudan, Samir came to the UK already passionate about accountancy, having studied for an Accountancy degree in Sudan. However, Samir had to leave his home country before he was able to finish his degree.

Deq's story

He has completed several courses run by ACH including, English, Maths, Employability and Health & Social Care. Before this he also completed six other courses in another organisation, showing how hard he has worked in order to benefit his new life in the UK.

Ishaq's story

Previously, in Uganda, Ishaq taught physics at a secondary school and had great ambitions to carry on with his career in education. Unfortunately, he was forced to leave his home country and became homeless here in the UK.
